The Asterix revolution in Portugal announced by Bravura on 26 December 2006 has picked up steam. We have just received three new titles from Asa, the publishers responsible for the Portuguese version of two Asterix albums: Asterix and Cleopatra, Asterix in Spain and Asterix and the Roman Agent, to be discovered in Bravura's library and in our Translation Exchange.
These two new albums are to be praised for having remained faithful to the spirit of the original text, down to the tiniest details - so ! very popular with our fans. For example: on page 33, the vile Artifis (or “Lindomeninis” in Portuguese) is interrupted whilst reading the newspaper Evening-Pharaoh. An observant reader will see a sly reference on one page of the periodical to one of the real forerunners of our comic albums: “Chéri-Bibis”, in reference to our French speaking hero Chéri-Bibi. Literally translated as “Querido Bibi” in the original Portuguese edition, it has been adapted here as “Dicktracis”, a new kind of pun that not only means more to our Portuguese readers, but that picks up on the Egyptian “-is” word-ending, that is so familiar to Asterix readers.
These new translations prove more than ever that there is only one motto for Asterix albums: for better and for laughter!
